Breeding common bean populations for traits using selection index Scientia Agricola
Lima,Dayane Cristina; Abreu,Ângela de Fátima Barbosa; Ferreira,Ricardo Augusto Diniz Cabral; Ramalho,Magno Antonio Patto.
A common bean (Phaseolus vulgarisL.) cultivar must combine desirable genotypes for several traits in order to be accepted by producers and consumers. This study aimed to evaluate selection efficiency when segregating bean populations for traits, by means of a selection index, in order to obtain superior progenies for traits considered. A total of 16 populations from the F4 and F5generations were evaluated in 2011 and 2012, respectively. The traits evaluated were plant architecture, plant disease, grain type and yield. Using standard scores (Z), the sum of the four traits (∑Z) was obtained and, based on this information, the best populations were identified. The evaluation of selection effectiveness was performed on 31 progenies from each population. The...

Efeitos do sexo, do vigor e do tamanho da planta hospedeira sobre a distribuição de insetos indutores de galhas em Baccharis pseudomyriocephala Teodoro (Asteraceae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Araújo,Ana Paula A.; Carneiro,Marco Antonio A.; Fernandes,G. Wilson.
Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the patterns of host plant utilization by herbivorous insects in natural communities. We tested four hypotheses aiming to understand the pattern of attack by gall-inducing insects on the dioecious shrub, Baccharis pseudomyriocephala (Asteraceae). The shrub occurs in the Parque Estadual do Itacolomi, Southeastern Brazil, and supports ten species of galling insects. The following hypotheses were tested: i) male plants are more attacked by galling insects than female plants; ii) larger plant modules are preferentially attacked by galling insects; iii) galling insects perform better on larger modules than on smaller modules; iv) galling insects increase in abundance with meristematic availability. To address...

Insect folivore damage in Nothofagus Blume trees of central Chile and its association with bottom-up plant community attributes Ecología austral
Altmann,Scott H.
The study of insect folivore damage in South American Nothofagus spp. is important for monitoring the health of these trees and for basic research, although empirical information is scarce. Previous evidence on N. macrocarpa (A.DC.) F.M. Vásquez and R.A. Rodr, and N. glauca (Phil.) Krasser trees of central Chile suggested that insect folivore damage in these species can be intense and here I explored damage levels of the two species and their relationship with bottom-up community attributes such as plant architecture, light availability and host age. Foliage samples were collected at fi ve fi eld sites at the end of the 2007-2008 productive season in trees of N. macrocarpa and N. glauca and damage was measured based on lamina removal (complete absence of...

Seed Predation of Copaifera langsdorffi Desf. (Fabaceae: Caesalpinioideae) by Rhinochenus brevicollis Chevrolat (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in a Brazilian Cerrado Fragment Ecología austral
Fagundes,Marcílio; Maia,Maria L.B.; Queiroz,Antônio C.M.; Fernandes,G.W; Costa,Fernanda V..
Seed predator insects are generally highly specialized herbivores that can be affected by several plant characteristics. In this study, the resource concentration hypothesis and the plant architecture hypothesis were tested by evaluating the attack of Rhynochenus brevicollis on Copaifera langsdorffi seeds. The study was conducted in a cerrado fragment situated in southeastern Brazil. The percentage of C. langsdorffi seed predation by R. brevicollis ranged from 1 to 30% (mean±SD, 9.31±6.41). The percentage of seed predation was negatively related to the number of fruits per branch. The predation of seeds by the beetle was positively affected by plant crown circumference, while plant height did not show any relationship with seed predation. Thus, our results...

Selection of squash “Menina Brasileira” carrying the allele “Bush” with high yield potential Horticultura Brasileira
Ferreira,Mariane G; Almeida,Gabriella Q de; Pessoa,Herika P; Dariva,Françoise D; Dias,Felipe de O; Nick,Carlos.
ABSTRACT This study was performed to introduce the allele Bush of commercial cultivars with a bush growth habit into Cucurbita moschata accessions and select the best crossings for production potential and standard fruit shape “Menina Brasileira” through general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA). To determine GCA and SCA, a partial diallel analysis was performed. The parental group (group I) consisted of two cultivars containing the dwarfism bush gene, and the second group (Group II), formed by five accessions of UFV Vegetable Germplasm Bank, with high production potential and fruit shape “Menina Brasileira”. We evaluated: productivity (PROD), fruit shape (FORM), growth rate until the 50th day after transplanting (CRESC), and...

Software for interpolation of vegetative growth of yerba mate plants in 3D PAB
Silva,Murilo Hilário Mazza da; Rakocevic,Miroslava.
The objective of this work was to build mock-ups of complete yerba mate plants in several stages of development, using the InterpolMate software, and to compute photosynthesis on the interpolated structure. The mock-ups of yerba-mate were first built in the VPlants software for three growth stages. Male and female plants grown in two contrasting environments (monoculture and forest understory) were considered. To model the dynamic 3D architecture of yerba-mate plants during the biennial growth interval between two subsequent prunings, data sets of branch development collected in 38 dates were used. The estimated values obtained from the mock-ups, including leaf photosynthesis and sexual dimorphism, are very close to those observed in the field. However,...

The gall maker Neopelma baccharidis Burck. (Homoptera:Psyllidae) on Baccharis dracunculifolia DC. (Asteraceae): individual, local, and regional patterns Anais da SEB
Collevatti,Rosane G.; Sperber,Carlos F..
Baccharis dracunculifolia, the host plant of the gall maker Neopelma baccharidis Burck., is locally distributed in delimited patches. The effects of the host plant individual (plant height, crown diameter, and crown volume), local (host plant patch), and regional (locality) characteristics on the number of galls were analyzed, in Viçosa (three patches) and in Rio Doce State Park, Marliéria (two patches), Minas Gerais State (20°45'S, 42°50'W; and 19°50'S, 42°30'W, respectively). The number of galls/individual plant increased homogenousliy with plant dimensions on local and regional scale. Gall load was also homogenous, but the proportion of galled plants differed on a local scale. The differences were related to local plant size differences, and not to host...
